Configuring XP and Points

Fine-tune your XP and points system with these commands:

/engagement-setup base-required-xp:<amount>
/engagement-setup points-name <name>
engagement-setup points-per-xp:<amount>

How levelling works

Levels get progressively harder. Going from level L to level L+1 costs L × base-required-xp. With base-required-xp: 200:

A member's XP is their progress inside their current level, not a lifetime total. When they level up, the cost is deducted and any surplus carries over — so 300 XP at level 1 gives level 2 with 100 XP banked toward level 3.

This means a large grant to a high-level member may not produce a level up. Give a level-26 member 3,000 XP and they keep all 3,000, but they need 5,200 before they rank up. /engagement give-xp reports their exact progress so you can see what the grant did. If a single grant is big enough to cross several levels at once, it applies all of them and posts one level-up message.

tip

If members are levelling too slowly, lower base-required-xp. Because the cost scales with level, small changes make a large difference at the top of your leaderboard.

To add XP to a user, you can run the following command:

/engagement give-xp user:<user> amount:

To remove XP from a user, the command will be as follows:

/engagement remove-xp user: amount:

Correcting a single member

To put one member back to a specific level, use reset-user. It sets their XP to 0 and posts no notification, so you can correct a rank quietly:

/engagement reset-user user:<user> level:<level> reset_points:<true|false> send_notification:<true|false>

level defaults to 1 and reset_points defaults to false, so their points balance is kept unless you ask for it to be cleared. To take someone who gained 18 levels they should not have back down, set level to their current level minus 18 rather than leaving it at 1.

send_notification defaults to false, so the correction is silent. Set it to true to post a neutral "Level Adjusted" notice in your notification channel — useful when the change is public knowledge and you would rather your members hear it from you than notice it themselves.

note

/engagement remove-xp also lowers a member's level, but it always announces the demotion. Use reset-user when you want to decide whether it is announced.
